CURRENT POSTGRADUATE STUDY

Masters in Clinical Leadership (M7M)
UTAS
February 2013 to December 2015

This is a national course, part-funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, which provides participants with the unique opportunity to enhance the quality of clinical leadership through a health-focused leadership programme.

Modules studied to date include
- CAM520 The Australian Health System in Context
- CAM521 Supervision & Leadership, Theory, Process & Practice
- CAM538 Translational Research and Health Service Innovation
- CAM613 Project Management for Health Professionals
- CAM623 Introduction to Action Research
- CAM720 Evaluation and Evidence Based Research

Future modules for the Second Semester 2014 include
- CAM722 Leading and Managing Change in Health and Human Services
- CAM723/4 Workplace Learning Major Project. My project is entitled ‘Tune In and Time Out – towards surgeon-lead prevention of never events’. Surgery accounts for between one-half and two-thirds of all in-hospital adverse events. Alarmingly, one half of these errors are considered preventable. This lead to the description of 27 ‘never’ events – adverse events that could be prevented. Surgical never events include procedures on the wrong body part or the wrong patient, wrong procedure on a patient and the unintended retention of a foreign object in a patient after a procedure. This project will examine the utilisation of the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist in the operating theatres at The Royal Hobart Hospital in an effort to eradicate never events.
